Would you like to be driven by the community?
Due to frailty, age or disability, using public transport or finding someone to take you to essential appointments is often difficult, if not impossible.
This is where the Community Car Scheme is able to help residents of East Herts. With our team of voluntary drivers we can deliver a flexible door-to-door service.
Anyone who is unable to use public transport and does not have access to a car can use the Scheme.
- Escorts are permitted but must be named
- Under 16-year-olds must be accompanied by an adult
- Children must be able to travel using only a standard seatbelt (12 years+ or taller than 1.35m, whichever comes first)
- Wheelchair users must be able to transfer with limited assistance or be escorted at no extra cost
You will be picked up from your door or another agreed pickup point, taken to your appointment and driven home afterwards. Depending on the time you will be spending at the appointment, the driver will either wait for you, return at an agreed time or wait for your call to be picked up again. If the driver cannot wait for you and needs to come back, double mileage will apply.
The current mileage rate is 45 pence per mile and miles are counted from the driver’s home to the pickup point, on to the appointment venue and back. We will make every effort to find a driver as close to you as possible. Please note, however, that we might have to send you a driver who lives further away from you, within sensible limits. This will, of course, be discussed with you before arranging the trip.
Please note that we aim to run our service as efficiently and environmentally friendly as possible which means you might share the car with another client if routes and appointment times permit this.
We try to accommodate each request but please be aware that we rely on our volunteers and might have to, at times, turn down a request. Please make bookings at least 48 hours in advance.
